Apollo Bay, Victoria -

These images indicate the massive erosion of the dune along Mounts Bay.
The dune forms the barrier between the sea and the infilled estuary of the Barham River. The Great Ocean Road is located on this dune.
The retention of the GOR on this primary sand dune is essential to any successful development on the flood plain behind it. The Western Coastal Board dispute this and are of the opinion that ultimately the Great Ocean Road must be relocated. This is an example of unsustainable development being supported by huge costs on the ratepayers.
Coastal recession at Mounts Bay
The Apollo Bay Sand Study Final Report August 2005 recommended remedial action but more than five years later nothing has been done.
The study recommended work ultimately costing up to $3.5 million dollars in 2007 dollars.
